For God Dwells Among Us
Our study of Ephesians has challenged us to see the church as the new temple of the Lord – in Jesus. The temple has always carried a worship and evangelism mandate in scripture. Beale posits that the Garden of Eden was the first temple served by Adam his first priest. He also traces the Temple/Eden image through the Bible to conclude that our mission as God’s people is to “expand Eden to the ends of the earth.” This is one of the reasons Paul uses garden imagery when talking about the church as the new Temple that “grows” in Ephesians 2:19-22.
Understanding the Land of the Bible &The Israel of God
In our study of Ephesians we have learned Paul was in jail for preaching the resurrection. But he was also in there for teaching that Jesus has made a new people (a new Israel) and a new Temple (the worldwide multi-cultural people of God). These two books explore this teaching in more depth. Many Christians believe God has a split plan: one for Christians, one for Jews. Other Christians see one big unfolding plan for all people in every nation: Jews and Gentiles who believe in Jesus savingly together in one Body. These works will help you struggle and settle these big issues in your mind. However you land, it will set the trajectory for how you see the whole Bible.
